Shall Not
I shall not, I say.
Shall not for every breaking day.
I shall not.
But if I may,
Perhaps with pitied eyes
You'll look on my disgrace
And with tempered regard
For every day I did proclaim.
You see, it was with honest intent
That every shall not slipped
Stubbornly from this tongue.
But he, oh he,
With sweet lips
And sweeter words,
Is the shall I will regret,
And the shall not
That would haunt me to the grave.
Shall not for every breaking day.
I shall not.
But if I may,
Perhaps with pitied eyes
You'll look on my disgrace
And with tempered regard
For every day I did proclaim.
You see, it was with honest intent
That every shall not slipped
Stubbornly from this tongue.
But he, oh he,
With sweet lips
And sweeter words,
Is the shall I will regret,
And the shall not
That would haunt me to the grave.
What clever way to say "never say never". I like how you've expressed regret. Lovely poem.

ReplyDeletei like the lilting dance of this poem, a real delight to read. :)
Oh, I resonate with this........"the shall I will regret", along with the shall not that haunts. Sigh. Beautifully said.
ReplyDeleteI love the sensitivity with which this poem is penned 😊
ReplyDeleteI always think I will regret more the things I did not do than the things I have done.
ReplyDeleteTerrific blend of clever mind and feeling heart. I love it.
ReplyDeleteI do hope he shall and shall not people do not haunt you but bring back memories of both the good times and the bad as that is what you need when alone pondering over your life lived..
