How Do You?

how do you jump
after hard falls
and skinned knees

how do you love
after rejection's tears
being carelessly used

how do you trust
when everything true and real
is shattered, scattered around your feet

how do you move on
when the shadows of past
still linger in the air

how do you believe
when tomorrow is never
easier than today

what's the secret
of the starry-eyed
the dreamers that never give in
the fighters that never back down

what do they know
that eludes this frightened heart
what do they have
that never sparked in me

teach me that faith
give me that strength
and passion and fearless will
that can never be broken or taken away

  1. Wow, a real and honest plea. And a gift hard to obtain. For some it comes naturally, some with slow skill and for some, always a battle with sparks of hope.

    Wonderful write.

  2. Beautifully said, Tracy. I remember feeling so much like the narrator in this poem when I was younger. One day at a time, we grow, and at some point we topple over into ease and comfort and understanding. What's that joke? how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

  3. Beautiful creation.. Eventually time teaches us all these skills via different experiences of life. Loved your poem :-)

  4. How, indeed. You have described the reality of so many, and done so with eloquence and honesty. Time teaches the answer to all of these hows.
